Does a driver need a CDL to operate a vehicle under 26,000 pounds gross vehicle weight rated?

No. A CDL is only required when driving vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,001 or more pounds; any combined gross vehicle weight rating (2 units) 26,001 or more pounds; any vehicle that is required to be placarded, or carriers of 16 or more passengers including the driver. (�383.5)
