Chiropractors in New York State are no longer allowed to perform Department of Transportation physicals.
The FMCSA informed the practitioners via letter that effective of the date of the letter, they would no longer be allowed to perform DOT physicals. The FMCSA notified them that their information would be publically available on the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners for three years, however, they are no longer Certified Medical Examiners.
Medical Certificates completed by New York State Chiropractors on or after June 2, 2016 will not be accepted and returned to the driver resulting in delays in processing and possible CDL downgrades. DOT physicals performed by a chiropractor who was listed on the National Registry before June 2, 2016, are still considered valid.
This removal from the National Registry stems from the New York State Education Department’s interpretation of current law that performing DOT physicals are outside a chiropractor’s type of practice in New York State.
